British Council

The British Council has over 60 language teaching centres, offices in over 100 countries and is the by far the biggest ELT employer in the world, with over 7500 staff (most of whom are involved in teaching). The Council is funded by the British Government, but works in a non-political way promoting British English and culture around the world.

For job-hunters, the British Council can help in two ways:

1. Each local office is a mine of information about local schools, job opportunities and conditions of work. Many offices have pre-printed information for prospective job-hunters and sometimes provide contacts to known schools in the country. For a list of local offices, see our directory on page 302 or visit www.britishcouncil.org

2. The British Council has over 60 teaching centres and it recruits around 300 teachers per year. For more information, contact Educational Enterprises, British Council, 10 Spring Gardens, London SW1A 2BN, Tel: +44 (0)20 7389 4931, Fax: +44 (0)20 7389 4140, Email: teacher.vacancies@britishcouncil.org

The British Council also publishes a wide range of leaflets and information packs about training to be an English language teacher and opportunities within the organisation. Either visit the information-packed website (www.britishcouncil.org) or contact its information centre: Bridgewater House, 58 Whitworth Street, Manchester M1 6BB, Tel: +44 (0)161 957 7755, Fax: +44 (0)161 957 7762
